The Sculptor and Architect
Located just off the busy 401 Express near a quiet cul-de-sac, is “Rosewood Estate”.
Designed by Hugh Allward, this elegant stone house, with its cedar roof, hip roof dormer windows, brown stone façade and pair of chimneys, is like a French countryside chateau.
When designing this house, Hugh Allward’s dad, a famous Canadian sculptor, Walter Seymour was just finishing up with the design of the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France. This 50,000-ton stone sculpture is considered one of the most important memorials in Canada’s war history.
The interior of the house has gone through several major redesigns, the latest in 2019. The exterior remains understated and rustic.
Many large old estates in Toronto have been converted into public event venues. Few remain as private residences like this one.
