Marshall McLuhan House (1911)

One of Toronto’s best kept hidden gem, Wychwood Park and its houses are special in many ways.

The winding roads that flow with the landscape, and old mansions that are randomly scattered, combined with century old trees make Wychwood Park such a unique neighborhood.

Before the days of “insta-grammy” and ticky-toky, in 1900’s Toronto, to record and share a moment of beauty, someone would whip out a trusty paint brush and start painting.

Mesmerized by its beauty, landscape artist Mary Evelyn Wrinch created “Ducks on Wychwood Pond” in 1930 (Photo Source: Mutual Art)

Overlooking Wychwood Pond is this 3 ½ storey stucco house designed by Eden Smith, the principal architect of Early Wychwood Park for his son Harry Smith.

The house was later owned by Canadian philosopher and professor Marshall McLuhan, who famously said, “The Medium is the message,” meaning the communication channel / method used to convey information significantly impacts how that message is understood.

McLuhan would invite his students to visit his Wychwood house. The beauty of the surrounding nature he believed would inspire them better than a traditional classroom. McLuhan also predicted the idea of the world wide web in his future, or the internet as we know today.

It was a rainy and misty morning when this photo was taken, but somehow that makes it even more dreamy.

It is hard to find a place that is pretty across all seasons, rain or shine.
